2021 City Championship Report

The 55th Annual Greater New York Scholastic Chess Championships was one for the books. Even though our program has competed at this event for many years - this year was extra special. The 2020 City Championships was the final event we played before our programs went completely virtual. One year later and with 135 players participating - it was great to be back! Our ICN program players represented an incredible 22 % of all players competing in Elementary Sections!

From Chelsea Prep fielding the tournaments largest public school team - to Lower Lab being named the Primary City Co-Champion along with 2nd place in the K/1 Championship section - to PS 10 surprising the field and jumping into the Top 3 in the Primary Championship section - to PS 59 fighting tooth and nail for a Top 3 finish in the Elementary Championship section - there was plenty of success to celebrate.

ICN programs accounted for 44 PERCENT of all Top 3 finishes across Elementary Championship Sections (K/1, Primary, Elementary)

Not only were we represented by our traditional ICN powerhouse programs - our newest program from PS 130M made an impressive City Championship debut - jumping into 13th place in the very competitive primary U 700 section!

In the end there was plenty to celebrate as ICN teams secured FIFTEEN Team plaque awards!

Individually our players also shined, claiming TWENTY SEVEN individual trophies and crowning TWO new individual City Champions!

It’s a long-standing ICN tradition that any player who wins a City - State or National Championship section gets raised high into the air! This year is no different - let’s all put our hands together for Kiaan & Emma who both went a perfect 5-0!

We could not be more proud of our players tireless preparation, dedication and commitment to excellence! This was on full display the entire weekend.

A special THANK YOU to our amazing coaches for their efforts both in the preparation leading up to the City Championships and also their guidance, tactical training and thoughtful leadership throughout the entire weekend!
