The Gift of Chess Launches Global Outreach

Dear Friends,

What started as an initiative to provide 10,000 NYC students with their own chess sets during the height of the pandemic is now expanding globally.

We are thrilled to announce that in partnership with Chess in The Slums Africa, we are launching our Gift of Chess global outreach starting in Lagos, Nigeria.

Chess is the great equalizer, a shared universal language that can help expand opportunities for all! Not only does it help develop key skills such as strategy and concentration, it breaks down barriers including age, race, gender and socioeconomic status. Heads of state can sit across the chessboard from children from the slum communities and be perfectly equal .

This March 20th - 24th, Tyrone Davis III , a founding board member of The Gift of Chess, will be heading from NYC to Lagos to work directly with Tunde Onakoya, to help provide 500 chess sets to the kids within the Lagos community.

New York City native, former student and US Chess Master - Tyrone is currently finishing his senior year at MIT where he is currently president of the chess club.

Tunde, also a Chess Master, has been globally recognized for his efforts as the founder of the Chess-in-the-Slums Africa initiative!

Chess forever impacted Tyrone and Tunde's lives, and we look forward to expanding that opportunity to many more kids through this partnership. Our initial goal will be to distribute 500 sets to the kids of Lagos with the hope of reaching many more as we raise additional funds through global awareness and fundraising efforts. Every dollar raised will go directly towards the purchase of chess sets for children within the Lagos community & beyond, along with providing education resources and access to the Gift of Chess global community.

About the Gift of Chess:

The Gift of Chess leverages the transformative power of chess by providing school students with access to their very own chess set and chess technology. The impact can be exponential. By learning chess and its transferable life skills, all children can positively impact their communities and the world.

As a recognized 501(c)(3) charitable organization, all donations made to The Gift of Chess through our partnership with GoFundMe Charities will be tax-deductible.

We welcome all sponsors, including corporations, foundations, and individuals.

In the words of Tunde Onakoya - "It is possible to do great things from a small place."

Thank you for your support in helping us transform lives through the power of chess - one child, one set, one game - at a time.
