PS 230 Chess Club & Team: 

Program Vision:

From complete beginners to advancing tournament players our goal is that all PS 230 players can experience both the joy & significant social/educational benefits of learning and playing chess. Our PS 230 Team will prepare for local, City, State & National Competitions.

Players are matched into groups based on skill, interest level & age. This allows coaches to identify and create the right training environment for each player. (complete beginner - advanced competitors) 

Approximate class groupings:

  • Rooks - 300 + USCF

  • Bishops - Advancing players with an eye towards competition

  • Pawns - K/1 introductory coaching and play

Fall Semester October 4th - January 31st

Spring 2019 Semester February 7th - June 31st

  • February 7th, 14th, 28th

  • March 7th, 14th (PTC), 21st, 28th

  • April 4th, 11th, 18th

  • May 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd 30th

  • June 13th 20th

Players will meet in the cafeteria directly after-school where they will have a light snack. Training and play will take place in classrooms onsite at PS 230. Pickup will occur at 5 PM in the lobby.

Lateral movements will occur, as we experiment with class grouping and activities to identify the optimal training opportunities for our players. Players will be promoted throughout the season as coaches feel fit. 

A high emphasis on participation, engagement and self-study will be placed on our team groups. 

PS 230 will have a weekly opening meeting, where past weeks success is recognized, the upcoming events are emphasized and expectations and team spirit is reinforced.

PS 230 Team Competitions:

Our PS 230 Team will compete at local, City, State & National competitions.

  • Fall semester - $400

  • Optional Late pick up 5:00 - 6:00 pm - $100
