Program Vision:

From complete beginners to advancing tournament players, our goal is that all PS 281 players can experience both the joy & significant social/educational benefits of learning and playing chess. Our PS 281 Team will prepare for local, City, State & National Competitions. Players are matched into groups based on skill, interest level & age. This allows coaches to identify and create the right training environment for each player (complete beginner - advanced competitors).

Approximate class groupings:

  • Rooks: 300+ USCF

  • Bishops: U300 USCF Advancing players with an eye towards competition

  • Pawns: K-1 introductory coaching and play

Thursday Chess Club & Team 

Fall 2019: September 19th - January 30th

  • September 19th, 26th

  • October 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th, 31st

  • November 7th, 21st

  • December 5th, 12th, 19th

  • January 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th

Players will meet in the cafeteria directly after-school where they will have a light snack. Training and play will take place in classrooms onsite at PS 281. Pickup will occur at 5:00 PM in the lobby.

Lateral movements will occur, as we experiment with class grouping and activities to identify the optimal training opportunities for our players. Players will be promoted throughout the season as coaches feel fit. 

A high emphasis on participation, engagement and self-study will be placed on our team groups. 

PS 281 will have a weekly opening meeting, where past week’s success is recognized, the upcoming events are emphasized and expectations and team spirit is reinforced.

Program Rates: $595 per semester

  • Optional Late pick up 5:00 - 5:30 pm: $159 per semester

  • If you need a one time late pick-up, please email ps281chess@gmail.com and provide $20 at pick-up.
